I see ice on Neptune!
Image of full sphere of Neptune, blue with dark bands near bottom of image and a large, dark, oval-shaped spot near the equator.

Neptune is the eighth and farthest planet from the Sun. It is about 30 times as far from the Sun as Earth is. It is large enough that about 58 Earths could fit inside it. The outside part of Neptune is hydrogen, helium, and methane gas. But scientists think that Neptune’s core could be rock and ice.

This image was taken by the Voyager 2 spacecraft.

Drawing of Neptune, with one-quarter cut away, showing small, speckled core.

The drawing shows what the inside of Neptune might be made of. The core could be about the same mass as Earth and made of rock and ice.

Neptune has a strange system of rings, or parts of rings. No one knows what they are made of.
